George Shepherd Miscellaneous Meanderings

There can be fewer more stressful situations than that of providing full time care for someone. Around 6 million people (11 per cent of the population aged five years and over) provided unpaid care in the UK in April 2001. While 45 per cent of carers were aged between 45 and 64, a number of the very young and very old also provided care. There were 114,000 children (just over 1 per cent) aged 5 to 15 years providing care in 2001, with 9,000 of these (8 per cent) caring for 50 or more hours a wee… Continue

George Shepherd Reality Shows

I will never understand the public's obsession with so called celebrities. Over the past few years there has been a rash of "reality shows" featuring rich and famous (and not-so-famous people). One of the first reality shows to be thrust upon us was the Osbournes. Ozzy Osbourne made his name as the lead singer with the heavy metal band Black Sabbath from whom he was apparently fired because of his drug and alcohol addictions. The Osbournes Show was vulgar and vile. The "stars" of this show make… Continue

George Shepherd Just Desserts!

I was overjoyed to read a news report yesterday which told how a couple of drunken yobs attacked two cross-dressing males who turned out to be cage fighters in drag! The yobs were very swiftly given their just desserts by the two cage fighters and were later arrested and charged. You might well ask yourself why any incident of violence would bring such joy to someone who will normally go to great lengths to avoid violence. The short answer is: I despise yobs. Perhaps I should explain my reasons… Continue

George Shepherd Ferrets

Seeing Nathan's ferret pics recently reminded me that there must be many people who, when thinking about getting a small animal for a pet think along the lines of chipmunk, gerbil, hamster, guinea pig, etc. but would never dream of having a ferret. Why not? The simple answer is that for years ferrets have had a bad press. They are dirty, smelly vicious animals. At least, this is the image many people have of them. In actual fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, some ferrets bite.… Continue

Richard Penney Good coffee beans for roasting

I just noticed that this company is on the sidebar of my browser as a Google Ad. I have bought coffee beans to roast from these folks for the past few years. Their green coffee beans for home roasting have been consistently great and of the highest quality. They are affiliated with some fincas (estates )in South America and they buy from farms all over the globe. Their adviser and former owner owns a finca and lives here after the harvests. Green Coffee Beans Quality beans!… Continue

George Shepherd Pet Hates

Maybe I'm becoming an angry old man but it seems that my list of pet hates increases with each passing year. I have listed a few, maybe you can identify with some of them: 1. Someone squeezing the toothpaste tube at the top. 2. Someone who gouges the butter out of the middle of the block instead of scraping it from the top. 3. Someone leaving the gate open. 4. Able bodied drivers who park in disabled parking bays. 5. Inconsiderate motorists. 6. Inconsiderate pedestrians. 7. Someone helpi… Continue

Published Date: 14 September 2009 By LAURA HARDING THE Forces' Sweetheart last night trumped the Fab Four in the battle for the top of the charts, making Dame Vera Lynn the oldest living artist in the world to have a number one album. Dame Vera's debut offering We'll Meet Again – The Very Best of Vera Lynn hit the top spot, meaning the 92-year-old has now usurped Bob Dylan as the oldest artist to grace the premium position. Steve MacDowall yesterday; posting. . . why we miss

I missed posting yesterday, not because of time, for I had a lot of it; not because of a lack of topics, because I had a lot I wanted to say yesterday; not because I forgot to, because I thought of it several times, but I was distracted each time by something or someone. Lots of phone calls came in with messages for either Beverly or Liz. I was emailing, it seemed all day - The day was full in one way and yet I could have posted a very good blog - but most of what I was thinking of yesterday is… Continue

Steve MacDowall The Green Pig market

I wanted to get some fresh cauliflower for part of our dinner; suggesting we get some we took a chance and drove out to the Green Pig Market. It was our first time, everything looked great. But the prices seemed a little steep. We came away with two bags less $45. The cheery pie was so, so, it was labeled as homemade but did not come close to anything Beverly could do. We saw the owner bringing things out setting things up, never a smile and when he told someone to do something – it came out as… Continue

Steve MacDowall the older I get. . .

I was reading 'Inez' reply in one of the forums and found this: The way we look at it is: You (the elderly) gave us so much and now we want to give back, so..." Welcome and stay for as long as you can." - what a wonderful attatude! my reply was: I find the older I get the more I want my mind to do that it will not -- as for my body well it's as if I'm talking to a stranger; my mind say… Continue

Steve MacDowall another nice day, so

Yes it's another nice day here in Moncton but my office is in the basement and the 25°C is out side with sun and lots of it. I like to work but just knowing what it's like outside makes me a little upset. Yesterday was a long day and I missed the sun also but it ended up nice because of my son and his wife came to vist and we had a great time. They brought us a bottle of French wine 'Coudoulet de Beaucastel - Cotes du Rhone -- 2004 red. I dont know when we will open it. The bottle was a house… Continue

Steve MacDowall Back to work

I got back to work today but I'm very tired - thought of not working tomorrow but I think I'll get up early and give it a good try. When ever we have a change even if it is for a few days it affects me more now then when I was a young pup. It is age or when we take a rest it’s just harder to get back to it. It’s so easy to just let go and say that’s it – going to take the day off but it only makes the next day harder. Better to get down to it; get into it, making the change complete. I wonder… Continue

With out the help of family and friends we would never have been able to pack and move. Friends they what live is all about. Whe had are first visit, fir… Continue

Steve MacDowall Second last day in our house

We have been living at 3083 Mountain Road in Moncton for 21 years. Liz was only 4, Danielle was 7 and Nathan was 10. It was a great place for the kids to grow up - lots of space inside and out. The only thing was they had to take the bus to school. We will miss this place in some respects but in others it’s just a house which we made into a home; we do have all our memories over the past 20 odd years along with the photos we have taken of our home. The house will stay but our home will be with… Continue
