For the enjoyment and passion of words, thoughts and disciplines

A Borders going-out-of-business sale is set to begin tomorrow at the bookstore chain’s 399 remaining locations, according to the joint venture managing the Borders liquidation.
Discounts of up to 40 percent will be offered on all merchandise at every location, said the joint venture, which added that more than $700-million worth of inventory will be put up for sale. The inventory includes books, puzzles, games, stationery, magazines, and music.
A Globe story from earlier this week noted that Borders has 15 remaining stores in Massachusetts.
The joint venture managing the Borders liquidation includes Gordon Brothers Group LLC of Boston.
According to media reports, Borders demise is a result of the chain overextending itself at a time when consumer reading habits were changing. Instead of buying books at a brick-and-mortar store such as a Borders, many consumers now buy books online, and others download digital prose for their e-readers.

Permalink Reply by Steve MacDowall on July 25, 2011 at 6:27am I got into a Borders the last time I was in Chicago - I loved it - picked up 2 books and I had a coffee also. I loved the store.
